Dr. Sun’s research focuses on understanding the complex dynamic characteristics of mechanical systems and civil infrastructures exposed to complicated environmental loadings such as winds, storm surge, ocean waves, seismic excitations, impacts, ice loadings and so forth. The research objective is to develop cost-effective, energy-efficient and intelligent solutions to mitigate and diagnose the structural damage caused by environmental effects. His primary research interests include:

Dr. Sun taught local high school students the fundamentals of truss structures and the method to calculate forces of truss structure members. He serves as a member of the coach team to help the students prepare for a national bridge design competition.
